let’s get lost.

Lately Colby and I have been super into watching the show Lost on Netflix. When I say, “super into,” I mean watching basically a whole season in a matter of a couple of weeks. Something you might not know about me is that I’m a closet TV-aholic. My junior year of college I watched about 5 shows on a weekly basis and also shared a love of Dawson’s Creek on DVD with my roommate/bestie, Hope (…and Gilmore Girls on DVD with Hope and Allie). Basically, if it’s on TV, I’ll probably like it, even if I feel guilty about it (e.g., Beauty and the Geek).

Truth be told, I’m kind of afraid to tell people that I’m into Lost. I’m legitimately scared that someone’s going to tell me some crazy plot twist that happens, a character that dies, or worst of all (gasp!) how it ends. So it’s kind of a big deal that I trust you, blog world, with this little secret. The other reason why I’m loath to tell people is that, in my opinion, it’s kind of lame to be this behind on pop culture.

Watching Lost is changing me, though. The only thing I can compare it to is how I feel when people tell me they’ve never read the Harry Potter books. Before this experience, I used to scoff at people around my age and ask how they were able to miss out on one of the biggest pop culture phenomena of our generation. It would irk me that they didn’t want to know how it ended, who died, etc. I felt like it was fair game since it had only been, oh, 10 years or so since the first one came out.

I get it now, though. Sometimes, you just can’t do it all. I was too busy reading Harry Potter in 2004 when Lost premiered. Maybe some of you were too busy watching Lost to read Harry Potter. Maybe you think a story about a friendly wizard and his courageous friends is the devil’s handiwork. Maybe you’re like Colby, and it’s kind of unconfirmed what you were doing in 2004 since you missed out on both Harry Potter and Lost (he’s just now reading the HP series, which I’m so proud of him for). Maybe you’re just too cool to care about pop culture.  Maybe you judge me for caring about such trivial things, but I can’t help it. I’m fascinated by our culture and the things we deem entertaining. Plus watching TV and reading are good, plain fun, and sometimes, you just need a mental vacation.

P.S. Watching Lost is changing me in other ways, too, like making me freaked out to fall asleep or get up to pee in the middle of the night. Last night I dreamt that I was on the island and my job was to collect bean sprouts for nourishment for those who were working on a construction project.
